Despite the mild temperatures, it's OFFICIAL: The start of the Autumn/Winter Season has arrived! Gone (...well at least for the next 6 months) are the warm balmy nights, lazy days spent on the beach and dressing down to show of that glowing tan. It's not all doom and gloom, AW10/11 shows have inspired us to wrap up in style. Here we take a look at some of the key looks for the coming season....girls, it's time to get inspired!
Dark & Gothic: Dark dresses, blouses, and trousers feel anything but basic with slivers of skin showing through. Yves Saint Laurent featured oversized black jackets worn as cloaks with the sleeves left free. At Christian Dior models in Mad Hatter enlarged bowlers and full leather cloaks began to sweep up the catwalk. This look is not complete without Leather, Leather and more Leather. It's no great secret that the humble leather jacket has become a wide-spread wardrobe staple over the last few Winters
Faux Fur: Our own Aussie beauty Abbey Lee Kershaw donned faux fur in the new Chanel ad campaign. If you don’t say it with fur next season, then say it with feathers.
Lace: Our love affair with lace will never go away. Emilio Pucci, Christopher Kane, Celine, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino, Stella McCartney, this year's fall runways were rich in lace, from Milan, Paris, London and New York.
Military: Gone (but not quite) are the decadent lashings inspired by military uniforms of the Georgian and Victorian eras. Rather, military is now about functionality and utility. This season fashion has taken a practical turn and embraced the khaki green, patch pocket world of utility. Army green is definitely THE colour, followed a distant second by navy. A great coat / military jacket is the key piece for the Autumn / Winter wearing of the style.
Navy: It's the new black according to fashionistas. Seen on AW10/11 catwalks from Aquascutum to Celine, Louis Vuitton and Alexander Wang, it's super sexy and sophisticated.
Nudes: A modern mix of cream, ivory, and stone make for a sleek and serene look. Chloe's AW10/11 collection predominantly offered in tan and beige, was a Seventies-themed collection that was super chic and all about fabrics of the most supreme quality. At Chanel, the traditional Chanel tweeds looked more sumptuous than ever in brown, encrusted with glacial jewellery. Christian Dior showcased a muted autumnal palette of mulberry, brown, cream and olive green
Sexy Rock 'n' Roll Chick: For women who don’t care if you think they look trashy – their bank accounts and their boyfriends suggest different. Velvet brocade frock coats came over pretty shirts and the military references we have come to associate with Balmain were still in evidence at their Fall show, but today they were more baroque ‘n’ roll. Needless to say, metallic sequinned dresses, shredded hems and trousers, bell bottomed flares, while leopard print are an ongoing trend for winter
1950s Silhouettes: Womanly curves were on full display at Louis Vuitton, Dries Van Noten, and Cacharel with A-line dresses and full skirts and an emphasis on drawing in the waist. This trend has certainly translated to lingerie, with long line bustier bras, high waisted panties and waist cinching waspies. Curves are back ladies!
