Sheer fabrics, lace and corsets make a statement on the runway...
Designers have long had a love affair with lingerie. The connotations of sex, the idle rich and silk-on-the-skin with fashion are strong and importantly, they sell. Making women look like sexual objects from the bedroom to the party is a tried and true fashion ploy that all the designers have employed from Armani to Donna Karan, but this season the trend has it's influences on the collections.
First emerging on the catwalks in Spring/Summer 2008, Ralph Lauren designed a big lingerie influenced collection with his Americana sexy satin silky shirts and wide pants like pajamas on the skin. Similarly, Kate Hudson in a Ralph Lauren white slip of a night-dress with pin-tucking neckline and accessorised only by a shawl she’d grabbed from the bedside and bed hair curls, looking all the part like she’d loved-and-left in her lingerie.
The influence of lingerie on Christian Dior's Autumn(Fall)/Winter 2009/2010 Couture collection is undeniable: and we must confess, we're in love. Some of the more subtle outfits in the collection bring the sheer trend and lingerie as outerwear trend into perfect harmony, balancing the sensual hint of what lies beneath with vintage elegance and modern flair. Unembellished suspender stockings peep through from under sheer skirts in an effect that is boldly sexy yet somehow unassuming; even the shoes in the collection are lingerie-inspired, with straps resembling bra fastenings.
How to wear the lingerie Look: Slips and camisoles may just well be the best use of lingerie as outwear with their intricate detailing and light fabrics. Perfect for the Spring/Summer season.
Inspiration: “Modern Pin-up Girls” is a homage to a woman who consciously plays with her femininity, loves presenting herself and revels in being seductive and sexy. This type of woman is nowadays personified by Dita van Teese, who in turn takes her inspiration from Betty Page and Marilyn Monroe.
Colours: Intensive and vibrant tones, like fuchsia pink, purple and midnight blue combined with black.
Fabrics: Satin in a silk look combined with the finest Chantilly lace adds a sophisticated look. Gauzy all-over lace and sumptuous, two-coloured Leavers lace give the collection its special boudoir look.
Key Styles/Shapes: Accentuated high waists, such as high-waist hipsters with suspender belts, interesting, contrasting coloured satin ribbons and large satin bows, low-cut triangle bras with surprising tailoring, and elegant draping and decorative straps.
Accessories: Pearl necklaces with contrasting coloured satin ribbons, high heels with contrasting straps, wide bangles with large, vibrantly coloured gems.
