This season sees a re-emergence of the lingerie inspired trend as lacey, satin separates with shoes and bags embellished with flirty, feminine touches are here to stay...at least for now.
Innerwear as outerwear is nothing new. The most irreverent and irresistible lingerie-inspired looks were the ruffled petticoat minis and bustier tops at D&G over a decade ago. John Galliano at Dior channeled Lauren Bacall from her film noir whodunits as Humphrey Bogart’s leading femme fatale. Alexander Wang seems to favor the undressed/dressed down look, so it was no surprise when a hint of boudoir styling made its way into his recent collections. Christian Dior, never hesitating to push the fashion envelope while maintaining an exceptional level of elegance, presented a more intentional, more seductive lingerie-inspired collection at this past fall's ready-to-wear shows. And Marc Jacobs took the trend to new levels when he showed satin bralettes worn outside of tops at his most recent Spring show. Though the only possible way to wear expensive lacy underpinnings (unless you are Sienna Miller on the red carpet or Kate Moss, who can get away with anything and everything) is to treat them for what they are: lingerie so pretty it deserves to peek out from under a spectacular structured jacket and thigh-split skirt.
