Arguably the most famous sex-kitten of all time - she was to the Sixties what Marilyn Monroe was to the Fifties - Brigitte Bardot's beauty and style is still an inspiration to this very day.

With the Cannes Film Festival leaving us reeling with fashion inspiration and the lure of summer holiday wardrobes on our mind, we're taking a look at the style of Brigitte Bardot. Famed for her curves, sex appeal, style and putting St Tropez on the fashion map, Brigitte Bardot did more than just take the silver screen - and later turn animal rights activist. She gave us the Bardot neckline, a penchant for gingham and made bikinis a must-have in any woman's summer wardrobe. 

Born in Paris in 1934, Bardot appeared in her first fashion show in 1949 and, subsequently, in French fashion magazine Jardin des Modes, she was discovered by French actor, writer and director Roger Vladim - who suggested her for the film Les Lauriers Sont Coupés and whom she later married. That film was never made, but it encouraged her to consider a career as an actress and - after several smaller roles - her career was launched when Vladim cast her in his controversial 1956 film - And God Created Woman. She starred opposite Kirk Douglas in 1953's Un Acte D'Amour, which propelled her into the international spotlight - where her killer curves and super-feminine sexuality lead to Bardot being dubbed a "sex kitten" and developing an almost cult-like following of male audiences.

No wonder Bardot's particular incarnation of femininity continues to inspire; just take a look at Spring's runways, where kittenish blondes abounded and va-va-voom sex appeal was to the fore.
