Elizabeth Taylor is one of the most legendary Hollywood stars of our time, as famous for being one of the most beautiful women in the world as she is for having married eight times
When it came to style, Elizabeth Taylor was fearless. Who can forget the Christian Dior gown she wore when she won her first Oscar in 1961, holding the statue in her delicate, white-gloved hands? Or the outrageous-at-the-time risks she took with makeup, accessories and husbands? In Cleopatra alone, Elizabeth Taylor made 65 costume changes. But in retrospect,Taylor’s very presence often turned mere movies into fashion films — from the demure yet sensual slips by Helen Rose that she slinked around in as Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof to the posh suits in MGM’s The VIPs (a.k.a. Hotel International), complete with fur hood by Pierre Cardin. The diamonds, the hair, the cleavage. In her younger days, she favored plunging necklines with straps poised to slip off her shoulders, her hair like a dark cloud around her thickly made-up eyes (word is she was born with a mutation that gave her double rows of eyelashes). As she grew older, her style got even bolder: The seventies brought tight miniskirts and more elaborate headpieces, and the eighties ushered in feather boas, bright blue eyeshadow, and poufy everything. Toward the end of her life, Taylor attended events for her many philanthropic pursuits in a wheelchair, swathed in silk caftans and draped with fur and velvet wraps and, in 1997, she won a Lifetime of Glamour Award from the CFDA.

Not only a role model in style, she pioneered the campaign against HIV and AIDS awareness in Hollywood after her good friend Rock Hudson died and The Elizabeth Taylor Aids Foundation has raised millions of dollars for the cause.
Elizabeth Taylor died on March 23rd, 2011 at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles from congestive heart failure, which she was hospitalized for six weeks ago. She was 79 years old.
DID YOU KNOW? Elizabeth Taylor designed a swimwear collection in collaboration with her American partners Mia Fonssagrives and Vicki Tiel that went on show at Maxim's in Paris in January 1968. Pictured below is one of the pieces from the collection.
