Image Consultant and stylist, Caaren Hulme, talked us through her tips for ensuring a perfect match between your swimwear and body shape.
To get the best out of our body types we need to focus and bring attention to the fabulous and defocus and deflect on the ordinary parts of our body. With colour, contrast, necklines, leg lines, patterns and structure we can choose the perfect bather to make the perfect body.
INVERTED TRIANGLE BODY TYPE
Typically this girl will have wide broad shoulders and a large bust. Your hips are narrow and legs and arms are slender. The aim is to minimize the bust and bring volume to the hips for balance.
• Wider shoulder straps will give support and create a balanced look.
• Dark solid colours will visually reduce your bust if you are self conscious.
• Square cut out/rounded scoop & deep V necklines will all give length to your torso.
• Avoid frills and circular patterns on the bikini top to minimize
• Avoid high necklines, these will only choke you.
• Halter styles are perfect for this body type.
• Add frills and patterns to your bikini pants/hip to balance out your shape.
• Wear brighter/lighter colours on the bikini pants/hip line to balance your shape
• Boy style pants can be worn successfully on this body type.
• A one piece with design details on the hip line will balance out your shape.

TRIANGLE/PEAR BODY TYPE
Typically this girl will have a narrow shoulder frame, small bust, narrow waist and larger hips. This trick is to bring attention to your bust and defocus on your hips area.
• Brighter/lighter colours will add volume to your bust.
• Circular patterns, frills, rouching will also add volume to your bust.
• Look for padded style bikini tops.
• Look for tops with wide straps that sit out wide on the shoulder.
• Higher cut leg openings with darker coloured pants will bring the eye up away from hip area.
• Avoid small ‘triangle’ cut bikini pants. They will only make your hips look bigger.
• A one piece with design detail at the bust will bring attention up.

RECTANGLE/COLUMN/RULER BODY TYPES
Typically this body type will be slender, with long arms & legs. Your bust and hips will be equal and your waist offers a slight curve only. The aim is to create shape at you waistline by bring softness and curves to your bust and hips.
• Patterns that add curves such as dots, flowers, paisley and waves can all be worn on bikini top and bottoms.
• Vertical stripes are to be avoided, as these only emphasize the straightness of your own torso.
• High cut bottoms worked back with deep V necklines will give you slender shape.
• Suits with panels cut away will bring the eye in and create a shaped waistline.
• Choosing pieces that have a dark midriff and lighter/brighter bust line and hipline will also give the illusion of shape.
• The tradition triangle bikini in a soft pattern is perfect for your body type.

HOURGLASS BODY TYPE
Typically this body type is in proportion with itself. This girl will have bust and hips equal to themselves and a shapely waist. The aim here is not to have fun with the styles that you are attracted to.
• The classic triangle bikini is a great choice for this body type.
• Choose styles that break the symmetrical rules, as you have the correct proportion to carry this modern look.

OVAL/ROUND/DIAMOND BODY TYPES
Typically this body type will carry extra thickness in the tummy area. Some girls carry it high and some will carry it low. The aim here is to minimize the tummy and draw attention to the face.
• Choose a one piece or tankini.
• Busy small to medium patterns will disguise the tummy.
• Horizontal designs will create a ‘ladder’ effect going up the body.
• Rouching and gathers along the side seams will also disguise the tummy area.

Happy swimming ladies!
