Following other publications such as French Elle, US Glamour or V Magazine, Italian Vogue has dedicated a month to curvaceous women.
It’s not very often that those who exceed a size 8 are given a look in where fashion is concerned, and even less so when it comes to gracing the cover of our favourite glossy magazine. The immaculate black and white shot sees Tara Lynn, Candice Huffine and Robyn Lawley in their underwear – thighs and all! – in an image reminiscent of 1960’s Italian cinema. It screams of glamour, seduction and long over-due excitement for seeing how women should look.
The move backs a continuing campaign against pro-anorexia websites, which editor Franca Sozzani has fully immersed herself in. She recently launched the online only Vogue Curvy feature, which features style tips, trends and paying plenty of homage to voluptuous beauties such as Adele, actress Christina Hendricks and the late Hollywood siren Jane Mansfield.
Many might have expected model Crystal Renn to appear in the pages, but the former plus-size icon (and eating disorder survivor) has dropped back down to standard model weight and thus leaves the limelight to colleagues Candice Huffine, Tara-Lynn, Marquita Pring, and Robyn Lawley.
Shot by Vogue Italia's go-to photographer Steven Meisel, the 'Belle Vere' (the cover's title, translating to 'True Beauties') lounge around a baroque-inspired apartment, wearing boudoir-esque ensembles by Alberta Ferretti, Dolce & Gabbana, and Agent Provocateur - all styled by Edward Enninful.
Even though fashion media (at least seemingly) tend to welcome all moves supporting more diversity in the industry, there has been some debate as to how useful it actually is to stir up 'fanfare' every time a curvier woman is featured in a fashion magazine, singling out plus-size models in special editions, and whether it would be better to just integrate them more matter-of-factly in as many editorials and campaigns as possible. The same has been said about other 'minorities' in fashion, such as black or Asian models.
