Christophe Decarnin is leaving Balmain after spending five years as creative director, yet a successor has not been appointed.
The Paris-based house made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday, but did not give any details about the reasons behind the decision. Sources also claim several assistants have recently left. Rumors about Decarnin's health have swirled since the notoriously shy designer failed to appear for a bow after his fall-winter 2011-12 ready-to-wear show last month. At the time, a spokesman for the house dismissed rumors that he was in a mental hospital, saying that he was resting on doctor's orders. Decarnin, the mastermind behind Balmain's now-hallmark peaked-shouldered jackets and ultra-minidresses, joined Balmain in 2005. While any of the rumour mill's suggested Dior successors, from Riccardo Tisci to Alber Elbaz to Stefano Pilati, would be suitable candidates for the Balmain job - so far industry insiders suggest the fashion house will appoint an internal employee as its new creative director.
